I agree 2 to 3 hours is a good bet. If the weather is poor there is plenty to see going around the different sections of the greenhouses which are zoned by plants from different places . Then there is a small but very nice cafe where you can eat inside serving hot drinks soups and homemade cakes. If the weather is good you can sit outside to eat and then walk around the outside grounds following paths with named plants in the borders. I have been twice already and will visit again next week - not seen everything yet -

I'm not sure about October but I would assume it will still be warm enough to enjoy. There are a few greenhouses, so you won't feel like you have missed out with the one shut! (Though do check the content of the Victoria greenhouse as my favourite had a waterfall).
