U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he will soon be back in Washington from the Group of Seven nations’ summit held in Canada due to the situation in the Middle East where the conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated.

Six of the Group of Seven leaders were trying, as their summit wraps up, to show the wealthy nations’ club still has the clout to shape world events despite the early departure of U.S.

President Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Alberta, ahead of its first session Monday. In their second meeting in as many months, coming amid elevated tensions caused by Trump’s tariffs on Canada and his references to the nation as the 51st U.

Speaking during a press briefing with Canadian PM Mark Carney on June 16, ahead of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Trump stated that Moscow should never have been excluded from G8 after the invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014.
