Abortion protections will be enshrined in Montana’s Constitution and largely cannot be infringed upon by state lawmakers, Montanans overwhelmingly decided, passing Constitutional Initiative 128 by a 14-point margin of 57% to 43% as of Wednesday morning.

Montana voters approved a ballot measure enshrining abortion in the state constitution, NBC News projects, delivering a victory to advocates for reproductive freedom.

As written, CI-128 would explicitly amend the Montana Constitution to include a right to make decisions about one’s own pregnancy, including the right to abortion. It states that the right “shall not be denied or burdened unless justified by a compelling government interest achieved by the least restrictive means.”

Montana CI-128, referred to as the Right to Abortion Initiative, sought to protect the right to an abortion and enshrine a 1999 Montana Supreme Court ruling.

Amendment 79, which enshrines the right to abortion in Colorado's constitution, has been approved by voters, according to the Associated Press.
