Ben Shelton won his first ATP Masters 1000 title Thursday night at the National Bank Open in Toronto and served notice to the tennis world ahead of the U.S. Open.

Ben Shelton became the first American since 2003 to win a Masters 1000 event on hard court after his title win on Thursday, Aug. 7.

The 22-year-old Shelton, seeded fourth, became the first American winner in the Masters 1000 hard-court event since Andy Roddick in 2003.
