The inspector general is calling on the Everett City Council to claw back the money after finding the bonuses were improper.

The Massachusetts Inspector General’s office is accusing Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria of receiving $180,000 in illegitimate “longevity payments” since 2016 and is calling for a municipal audit and for the money to be returned.

"It is imperative that the city council act to recover these funds from the mayor and return them to the city’s treasury," the state inspector general said.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria asked for the bonuses after learning other city employees were making more than him, according to the inspector general.

Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria received $180,000 in longevity bonuses he was not entitled to, then hid the payments from the City Council and the public, Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro wrote in a letter issued Thursday.
