A federal judge on Friday ordered that a Turkish Tufts University student detained by immigration authorities in Louisiana to be brought to Vermont by May 1 for a hearing over what her lawyers say was apparent retaliation for an op-ed piece she co-wrote in the student newspaper.

A Turkish student from Tufts University, detained in Louisiana over an opinion piece criticizing the university's stance on Palestinian issues, must return to New England by May 1 for a hearing. A federal judge ordered the transport to assess the legality of her detention.

The Department of Homeland Security argued that Rümeysa Öztürk posed a flight risk. The Louisiana immigration judge agreed and determined she should continue to be held.
