California Attorney General Bonta Announces $7.5 Million Settlement with Walmart for Illegal Disposal of Hazardous Waste and Medical Waste

Without admitting wrongdoing, the retailer agreed to pay a $4.3 million civil fine plus $3.2 million to cover legal costs.

Walmart could pay up to $7.5 million in penalties following a 2021 lawsuit alleging the retailer dumped over 80 tons of hazardous waste in California landfills.

Walmart will pay $7.5 million in civil penalties and costs in a settlement with California prosecutors who alleged the retail corporation unlawfully disposed hazardous waste and medical waste from their facilities statewide in city landfills.

Walmart will pay $7.5 million to resolve charges that the largest U.S. retailer illegally disposed of hazardous and medical waste from its facilities into California municipal landfills.

The store operator also paid out $25 million in penalties in 2010 after San Diego prosecutors took them to court over negligent practices.
