Syria's new leaders are reported to have given some foreign Islamist fighters senior official posts in the country's armed forces. The army is being re-organised by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – the Islamist group that is now effectively in charge of the country – following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad earlier this month.

The Defense Ministry announced Sunday that at least six of the 49 new military appointments involve foreign nationals. Three were given the rank of brigadier-general, while others were named colonels.

Elections may not be held in Syria for up to four years, the country’s de facto leader has said, in his first comments on an electoral timeline since his rebel group overthrew the Assad regime earlier this month.

Sharaa, the leader of the new governing authority in Syria, said in a Sunday interview that it could take up to four years to hold elections in the country. In an interview with Saudi television network Al Arabiya,
