The Madras High Court on Saturday ordered to constitute an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officers to investigate the Anna University sexual assault case. The court also directed Tamil Nadu government to pay Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the victim in connection with the FIR leak with the details of the women published on the police website.

On alleged sexual assault of a student inside Anna University campus, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi said, “The Chief Minister has ordered action against the culprit without any bias. Accordingly, the accused has been arrested and action has been taken.

The Anna University should ensure the sexual assault survivor completes her course free of cost and the Chennai Police should provide interim security to her family, Justices SM Subramaniam and V Laks

The court also took firm action regarding the breach of the victim's privacy and the leak of the FIR, ordering the Tamil Nadu government to compensate the victim with Rs 25 lakh in recognition of the trauma caused by the FIR's disclosure.

Protests erupted in Chennai after an incident of sexual assault emerged from Anna University, where a second-year engineering student was reportedly assaulted while she was with a male friend on the campus on Monday. The Greater Chennai police swiftly arrested a 37-year-old man, identified as Gnanasekaran, who sells biryani on the pavement nearby.

Calling the DMK an “evil force,” Annamalai urged the middle class to rise and question the government. He demanded the sacking of the Chennai city police commissioner or at least the deputy commissioner over the Anna University case.

A second-year student of Anna University was allegedly sexually assaulted by the accused on the university campus on December 23. The accused, 37-year-old Gnanasekharan, who works as a food vendor, was arrested by police from Kotturpuram.
