New College of Florida is on its intellectual deathbed. Once an authority-challenging, free-thinking institution for students passionate about learning, a place where difference was celebrated and creativity encouraged.

"These comments did not align with our expectations nor our institutional mission," a college spokesperson said.

Despite Tampa Bay K-12 schools seeing a steep enrollment decline this fall, a preliminary report from a national nonprofit projected Florida’s college enrollment to increase for the third straight year.

The college has faced mounting criticism over its spending and other changes in the wake of a conservative overhaul. Florida Board of Governors didn’t publicly share those concerns.

The Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the 12 state universities, met in Tampa. Members discussed the contents of a state audit measuring the efficiency of each school.

A recent WalletHub study ranked the best college towns for the 2025-2026 school year. Three Florida cities placed in the top 10 nationally. The study compared over 400 cities based on affordability, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities.
