Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is directing a new Starship Troopers, but it will not reboot the 1997 film by Paul Verhoeven.

Director Neill Blomkamp scored a hit with 2009's District 9, but also has a track record of unrealized sci-fi projects.

Sony is behind the new adaptation, which is not a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film, but rather will go back to the 1959 novel as source material.

Neill Blomkamp is doing his part. The “District 9” and “Chappie” filmmaker is attached to write and direct a new film adaptation of “Starship Troopers,” the 1959 sci-fi novel by Robert A. Heinlein that was memorably brought to theaters by director Paul Verhoeven with the 1997 satirical spectacle of the same name.

We’ve confirmed that a new Starship Troopers is happening at Sony with District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp writing and directing. The new movie will go back to the 1959 source material by Robert A. Heinlein and not be based on the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie.
