The United States is reviewing its relationship with Tanzania following a brutal crackdown on protesters after contested presidential elections in October, the US State Department announced on Thursday.

John Heche, vice chair of the opposition party Chadema, said the United Nations and African continental bodies should oversee a transitional government and a fresh, fair election. He said the Oct. 29 election, which the ruling party won by more than 97%, was null and void, and called for the dissolution of the Tanzanian electoral body.

The U.S. is "comprehensively reviewing" its relationship with Tanzania after hundreds were killed in a violent post-election crackdown.

Tanzania’s government warned on Monday that protests planned for Tuesday would be unlawful and amounted to an attempted coup, as security forces deployed heavily in major cities.

Tanzanian authorities have wrongfully arrested alleged protest organizers and opposition supporters ahead of nationwide protests called for December 9, 2025.

Police trucks and officers on foot patrolled Tuesday morning in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, the administrative capital Dodoma and the northeastern city of Arusha, while roadblocks were erected near key government installations including Hassan's heavily guarded offices in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
