Veterans with disabilities are exempt from VA home loan funding fees only if a disability rating is issued before loan closing.
Under a previous court precedent, VA examiners were required to consider what a veteran’s disability would look like without medication. Under the new rule, the rating is based on how the veteran presents at the time of the exam,
VA Secretary Douglas A. Collins posted on X on Thursday that the agency will not enforce the rule but will continue to collect public comments.
Veterans groups said the rule is an “abrupt shift” and was “issued in a closed and unnecessarily expedited process.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs is halting enforcement of a new rule for determining disability payments after veterans across the US expressed outrage for what they said would likely reduce benefits for many.
From Rep. Mike Levin, the bill is meant to help veterans who are still awaiting their disability rating or service members still in the transition process.
Advocacy groups say the policy may reduce ratings and have an "unforeseen and harmful" impact.
