The Northern and Southern Taurid meteor showers will peak in early to mid-November this year, possibly bringing fireballs.

Much like the Southern Taurids, the Northern Taurid Meteor Shower is a long-lasting, low-production event, running from Oct. 13 to Dec. 2. It will peak in the middle of November with a waxing gibbous moon that will set around 1:35 a.m., leaving dark skies later in the night.

Astronomers track roughly three dozen meteor showers every year, but only around 12 or so tend to be significant enough to watch. Of those 12, half occur during the fall season. In fact, there’s not a single night from Fall Equinox to Winter Solstice without at least one meteor shower active at the time.

"The dust grains eventually become the Orionids in October and the Eta Aquarids in May if they collide with Earth's atmosphere." The best time to see these meteors is during the hours after midnight,

The Orionid Meteor Shower will hit its peak this evening as Earth passes through the wake of Halley's Comet, producing up to 25 spectacular shooting stars every hour.

The Orionids meteor shower peaks on Monday, but will continue to light up the sky through Nov. 22, as debris from Halley's Comet enters Earth's atmosphere.

Admirers of space will have a few more reasons to look up next month, as three more meteor showers are expected to reach peak visibility.
