DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) — Firefighters were called to a building fire Thursday night in Derby. One person had suspected serious injuries at the scene, according to dispatchers. It was not immediately clear whether the victim was a firefighter or a civilian.

Access to the building was limited and difficult. Crews launched an aggressive offensive attack but were met with hoarding, high heat, and heavy fire conditions throughout. After unsuccessful attempts to put the fire out and dangerous conditions, the fire was declared defensive and crews backed out to a safe location.

The Derby Fire is moving quickly in Garfield and Eagle counties, burning almost 1,000 acres between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The Turner Gulch Fire has burned 31,699 acres and is 80% contained. The Bureau of Land Management has reopened land north of Hwy 141 near Gateway, CO., and areas south of the highway remain closed to public access until the Turner Gulch Fire is contained, according to fire officials.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - In 2025, the City of Derby responded to three fires that involved air fryers. The most recent fire happened on Wednesday. Now, the fire department is issuing a warning for those who use the appliances.
