Firefighters continue to make progress in containing the massive Hughes Fire that broke out Wednesday near Castaic Lake, growing to more than 10,396 acres and forcing mass evacuations.

The Hughes Fire was first reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. along Lake Hughes Road, near Castaic Lake and the 5 Freeway, according to Cal Fire.

As of 6 p.m. PT, the Hughes Fire has spread at least 9,269 acres. across LA and Ventura counties. Students at Castaic schools have been evacuated to nearby locations awaiting parents to pick them up.
