Iowa’s book ban in public schools has caused “chaos and confusion” and deprived students of access to more than 3,000 books based on content and viewpoint, the plaintiffs say.

Civil Liberties Union of Iowa have filed a new request for the courts to block Iowa’s law that bars certain books from school libraries.

Two Iowa educators and an Iowa LGBTQ+ advocacy group filed a new request for a federal judge to block Iowa’s book ban and “don’t say gay” law on Monday.  The filing comes after a block on the law was lifted in August by the 8th Circuit U.

The battle over an Iowa law that restricts and bans certain books continues with a new request for an injunction. The law, SF 496, signed by Governor Reynolds in May of 2023, bans books that contain descriptions or visuals of sex acts as well as discussions about gender identity and gender

The ACLU and Lambda Legal were successful in getting the law blocked in December, which allowed some books to return to school shelves. However, the state appealed, and a federal judge lifted the injunction in August.
