The Red Sox optioned Campbell to Worcester this past Friday after he struggled both offensively and defensively. The 22-year-old batted .223 with a .319 on-base percentage, .345 slugging percentage and .664 OPS in 67 games (263 plate appearances) for Boston. He had negative-15 defensive runs saved in 471 ⅔ innings at second base.

ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to report Campbell's demotion on Thursday. The Red Sox are expected to announce the move Friday ahead of a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco, with outfielder Wilyer Abreu set to be activated from the Injured List to take Campbell's spot on the roster.
