The Golden Knights have already secured Mitch Marner but now must manage their cap space to improve their defense, meaning a Stanley Cup–winning veteran could be on his way out soon.

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired Mitch Marner in a sign-and-trade with Toronto Maple Leafs. That's according to a person with knowledge of the move who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced.

Marner was set to hit unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career after his contract with the Maple Leafs expired on June 30. Rather than hit the open market, he was dealt to Vegas in exchange for Nic Roy and proceeded to sign an eight-year contract worth $12 million per season.
