Health officials detect 1st bird flu case on Oahu

LIVE: Health officials to address avian flu that was detected on Oahu
Symptoms of avian influenza may include fever, cough, sore throat and conjunctivitis. Antiviral flu treatment is recommended as soon as possible. Contact the Department of Health at 808-586-4586 immediately if you believe you have contracted H5N1 or been in close contact with sick or dead animals.
Avian flu detected on Oahu
The health department regularly samples wastewater as part of their efforts to detect infectious diseases. This surveillance was able to detect avian flu in the past week. The department is now investigating possible sources of the case.
DOH official gives update on avian flu detected on Oahu
The detection was made at the Wahiawa wastewater treatment plant. DOH continues to collect samples to be sure there is not a sustained occurrence.
