Two Virginia Beach police officers described as hardworking with stellar reputations were fatally shot Friday by a driver who then apparently killed himself following a routine traffic stop, police said.

The officers spotted a car with expired licensed plates and ordered the driver to stop, the police said. The driver who opened fire was later found dead.

Two young officers were killed Friday night during a traffic stop in Virginia Beach. While officers were on the ground "defenseless," the suspect allegedly shot them a second time.
