Frank Hamer was commissioned as a Special Investigator, leading a six-man posse that included former Ranger Maney Gault and local Louisiana officers. They tracked the Barrow Gang for 102 days, driving an estimated ~500 miles daily~, often sleeping in their car. The ambush on May 23, 1934, was brief and violent, designed to prevent the outlaws' notorious shootouts. Afterwards, Hamer declined all media interviews, a 'Hamer-Gault Hero Day,' and lucrative offers for his story, believing it was wrong
