What if brain health isn’t just biological but deeply relational? I recently joined Deanna Minich, PhD, MS, FACN, CNS, IFMCP, for a conversation that explored where science meets spirituality and why that intersection matters for how we age, heal, and live with meaning. We discussed how lifestyle choices shape inflammation and decision-making ...

People often worry that creatine causes weight gain, but here’s what’s really happening. Creatine helps your muscles store energy and draw in water. That can cause a small, short-term increase on the scale, but it’s not fat. It’s water within the muscle and healthy muscle growth. In other words, that extra weight is a sign your body is getting stronger. Research also shows that creatine supports both brain health and metabolic function, which is why it’s one of my go-to supplements. If you want

Despite so many highly publicized breakthroughs in medical science, cancer remains a formidable disease. Deaths from cancer are actually continuing to rise, at a rate of 3.5 to 4% each year. Dr. Thomas Seyfried believes that the common narrative we have for what causes cancer is, in fact, incorrect. That's why I've asked him to join me on The Empowering Neurologist today. This is a somewhat science-based discussion, but hang in there as there are some critically important gems of information tha

Fair to say that we all assume that aging is inevitable. In reality however, there is no biological law that says we must age. Over the years we've seen a variety of theories proposed to explain why we age including the accumulation of damage to our DNA, the damaging effects of chemicals called "free radicals,” changes in the function of our mitochondria, and so many others. Our guest today, Dr. David Sinclair, believes that aging is related to a breakdown of information. Specifically, he descri

To be sure, we look at a wide variety of medical issues on The Empowering Neurologist. But one event that will affect us all is dying. Here in America however, the actual process of dying, the patient's experience during the process, is completely ignored in medical training. Our guest today is Dr. Christopher Kerr, author of the new book, Death Is But a Dream (https://amzn.to/3a0dqnO). Dr. Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Last February, my wife and I were attending a health-related symposium and noted that many of the speakers were wearing an OURA. We learned that the OURA ring was one of the latest entries in the field of wearable technology. What was most intriguing for us was how many of our friends described the insights they were gaining in terms of the length and quality of their sleep. So we decided to buy a couple of these and learn, firsthand, what all the excitement was about. Our level of understanding

If there’s one thing I hope that you’ve learned in being a member of this community, it’s that no part of the body works in isolation. In this discussion, one area we’ve neglected in this conversation is the mouth and our oral health. This is a message of hope, and I want to be sure it comes through clearly: Parkinson’s isn’t just about genetics. While we can’t change our DNA, we can influence many of the other factors that affect risk, such as blood sugar imbalance, toxin exposure, and repeated head trauma. Type 2 diabetes, for example, is linked to a significantly higher risk of Parkinson’s. But because it’s often preventable through nutrition and lifestyle, that gives us more control than we may realize. From your plate to

By 2060, dementia cases are expected to double. While aging may play a role, lifestyle factors are just as critical—and that means there are things you can do today to protect your brain. ✅ Prioritize metabolic health: High blood sugar and insulin resistance increase your risk. Monitoring fasting insulin and wearing a continuous glucose monitor can help you stay on track. ✅ Move your body: Exercise is one of the most powerful ways to protect your brain and reduce risk. Considering hormone replacement therapy? When it comes to Alzheimer’s risk, timing plays a critical role. Research suggests that HRT may have the greatest impact when it’s initiated closer to the menopausal transition, roughly within five to ten years after the final menstrual period. Starting much later appears to offer less benefit for brain health. If you’re considering HRT, it’s worth having a thoughtful conversation with your doctor about when may be the most appropriate time to start. | Da

I often get asked about antidepressants and their impact on brain health. Some studies suggest that certain commonly prescribed medications may increase the risk of dementia. For older adults, especially those at higher risk for Alzheimer’s due to age, sex, metabolic conditions, or family history, I encourage you to be aware of this research and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider. Many sweeteners marketed as healthy can actually harm your metabolism. Splenda disrupts the gut microbiome, and agave nectar, although it sounds “natural,” is about 70 percent fructose. Fructose increases fat storage, reduces mitochondrial function, and contributes to insulin resistance. For anyone prioritizing metabolic and brain health, avoiding these sweeteners is a straightforward and powerful step. One sweetener I do recommend is allulose, which has a low or negligible effect on blood sugar
