This painting by Willem de Kooning has a dramatic history—in 1985 it was sliced from its frame, stolen from the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and hidden away. For 32 years, the painting's whereabouts were unknown. It was discovered again in 2017. Since 2019 the painting has been in Getty's paintings conservation studio, where a team of conservators and scientists has been working to reunite the stolen painting with the edges of the sliced original canvas left behind by the thieves.
