Krzysztof Penderecki’s deeply disturbing ‘Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima’ has become one of his best known orchestral scores. The piece contained previously unheard means of powerful expression – explosive and liberating. By employing both known and unknown modes of articulation, Penderecki made strings sound akin to percussion and wind.
