Ever wondered how the cars of a train are connected? The semi-automatic coupler style shown here represented a big step forward in train operation. Previous couplers required a railroad worker to physically get between the train cars to operate a link-and-pin coupler—a dangerous task that resulted in frequent injuries and even deaths. The link-and-pin couplers had no standardized design, so rail workers spent hours trying to pair the pins with the links. And as railroad technology advanced, the
