It wouldn't be a spring tide flight if we didn't stop by the Dizzy Bridge. This is the first major tidal restriction heading upstream on the Pines River. Bathymetry studies by USEPA and Ed Reiner have documented scour holes nearly 50 feet deep on the downstream side, which is deep enough to fit a 4-story building below the riverbed!! Scour holes develop when fast-moving tidal currents concentrate in a narrow area and erode the riverbed over time. Captured on 2/1/26 during morning spring tides. |

This is not a natural feature and is rapidly eroding and widening from tidal forces. First 2026 King Tides: Part Two 🌕🌊 Today’s timelapse runs from 11:15 AM to 12:30 PM, capturing the marsh through peak flow, slack tide, and the beginning of the ebb. NOAA’s Boston tide gauge recorded a peak of about 12.5 feet today. That is roughly four inches higher than yesterday and a very respectable king tide. One at 300 feet over the marsh and another at 100 feet over the Suffolk Downs and Sales Creek area, which is normally restricted airspace.
